A remake of Heaven Can Wait is in early development at Paramount with Glen Powell, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Stephen Gaghan, an Oscar winner for his script for Steven Soderbergh’s 2000 crime film Traffic, is writing the project for Powell to star. Based on Harry Segall’s play of the same name, the original 1978 movie Heaven Can Wait starred Warren Beatty and was nominated for nine Oscars including best picture, with the film notching a win for best art direction.
Heaven Can Wait centered on Beatty as an NFL quarterback who dies prematurely due to an antsy angel and returns to Earth in the body of a recently murdered millionaire. Beatty directed the film with Buck Henry and co-wrote the script with Elaine May.

A24 has nabbed U.S. rights to “The Death of Robin Hood,” one of the hottest packages at this year’s Cannes. The Sherwood Forest-set film stars Hugh Jackman and Jodie Comer and is directed by Michael Sarnoski, the filmmaker behind the critically acclaimed “Pig” and this summer’s “A Quiet Place: Day One.”
According to the official logline, the film will find Robin Hood “grappling with his past after a life of crime and murder.” Instead of the merry outlaw seen in certain previous versions of the story, like the one portrayed by Errol Flynn, this Robin Hood is “a battle-worn loner [who] finds himself gravely injured and in the hands of a mysterious woman, who offers him a chance at salvation.” Production on “The Death of Robin Hood” is set to begin in 2025. A24 will release the film theatrically. Negotiations were highly competitive with several potential buyers circling the film.

Paramount Network announced Monday that Yellowstone has resumed production.
Filming on the Western hit’s final season five episodes has gotten underway in Montana.
While start of production was later than previously thought, MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios still expect the drama to return in November, as previously announced last year.
There was no update on the show’s cast — or whether star Kevin Costner will make an appearance in the final episodes that are expected to wrap the series.
Yellowstone aired it last episode more than a year ago — in January, 2023 — amid Paramount Network deciding to split the season into two parts. Talks of infighting over scheduling and script delays between Costner and showrunner Taylor Sheridan ensued for many months, with Costner also focusing on his upcoming Western epic Horizon: An American Saga. The cast and crew had been planning to resume filming in March 2023 with an announced summer premiere date,...

Richard Foronjy, who spent more than eight years in prison before he turned to acting and appeared in such films as Serpico, Midnight Run, Repo Man and Carlito’s Way, died Sunday, his family announced. He was 86.
Foronjy said he was arrested more than 20 times for “forgery, bank robbery, credit card rip-offs, assorted crimes and skullduggery … [guilty of] almost everything except drugs and homicide,” he said in a 1987 interview with Upi’s Vernon Scott.
The Brooklyn native was convicted only once, but that got him an 8½-year stretch in the New York prisons Sing Sing and Attica before he was released when he was 32.
In Hollywood, not surprisingly, Foronjy specialized in portraying cops and crooks.
He was a cop killer in his screen debut, Serpico (1973), and cops in The Morning After (1986) and Prince of the City (1981), all for Sidney Lumet. “I was especially good at playing cops, no doubt because I got to...

Nickelodeon alum Daniella Monet hasn’t, and “probably won’t” ever, watch Quiet on Set. The actress also said this week she “came out unscathed” amid ongoing revelations about abuse on the network’s various shows throughout the early aughts and 2010s.
“I never watched it. I probably won’t,” Monet said in a preview of this week’s Heal Squad X Maria Menounos podcast from People.
Monet played Trina Vega on Nickelodeon’s Victorious.
Investigation Discovery’s Quiet on Set was a five-party docuseries that detailed allegations of abuse, sexism, racism and inappropriate behavior involving underage stars and crewmembers on Nickelodeon TV show sets run by Dan Schneider. Since the documentary’s release, Schneider has released an apology, and also sued the show’s producers for defamation.

Seth Rogen has gotten into TV in a big way: As star and EP of Apple TV+’s “Platonic,” exec producer of Prime Video’s “The Boys” franchise, animated series like “Invincible” and “Sausage Party: Foodtopia,” and his upcoming Hollywood satire “The Studio,” also for Apple. But he’s still bullish on film as well. “I think people still like movies,” he tells Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast. “Last year, lots of movies did very well. I think if movies were going go away, they would have a long time ago.”
Rogen is passionate about this point. “Paintings are still around.

Marvel Studios’ X-Men movie is gaining momentum as the project lands a writer.
Michael Lesslie, who is known for his work on the series The Little Drummer Girl and the recent prequel feature The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, is in talks to pen the new film focused on Marvel Comics’ iconic mutant team, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. The feature does not currently have a release date or a director attached.
X-Men remains a popular property for Disney following the recent success of well-reviewed Disney+ animated series X-Men ’97. The show is a reboot of the fondly remembered X-Men: The Animated Series, which launched in 1992.
The team made its comics debut in 1963 from creators Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Its first feature film arrived in 2000 with 20th Century Fox’s X-Men from director Bryan Singer. Two sequels followed, with the team getting rebooted for 2011 prequel...

The X-Men are one step closer to joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe with their own movie.
Screenwriter Michael Lesslie (“The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes”) is in talks with Marvel Studios to write the first “X-Men” movie since the mutant superhero franchise was acquired by Disney in its purchase of 21st Century Fox in 2019.
As with every Marvel Studios film, Kevin Feige will produce, but nothing else about the film has been set, including director or cast. Marvel has been slowly seeding the MCU with mutants over the past two years, including brief mentions in 2022’s “Ms. Marvel” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” and appearances of the X-Men’s namesake and leader, Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), in an alternative universe in 2022’s “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” and of Beast (Kelsey Grammer) in the post-credits sequence of 2023’s “The Marvels.”

It isn’t yet clear whether NBC will walk away with rights to NBA games beginning next year (the league is still holding talks with current rightsholder Warner Bros. Discovery, though NBC made an aggressive bid for its package).
But one thing is now clear: “Roundball Rock” will be making a comeback.
The song, composed by John Tesh, was the anthem of The NBA on NBC from 1990 until the network lost NBA rights in 2002.
Tesh was a guest on The Dan Le Batard Show Tuesday, and he was asked whether the network had reached out to him about re-licensing the song.
“They have, actually, yeah,” Tesh said when asked by the radio host about a reach-out from the network. “Nothing firm, but they said, ‘Hey, can you stay frosty on this?’ like a Navy SEALs thing.”

One of the biggest 3 Body Problem mysteries since the show ended has been: What did Netflix’s renewal announcement mean, exactly?
During the streamer’s upfront presentation last week, Netflix promised “additional episodes” of the acclaimed sci-fi drama to “finish the story.”
Of course, “additional episodes” could mean anything from two episodes to five seasons and, naturally, many fans worried that the ultimate answer would be too close to the former for comfort.
But showrunners David Benioff, Dan Weiss and Alexander Woo assure things are going to be just fine (for the show, at least, if not for their ensemble drama’s characters facing an alien invasion). While the trio didn’t reveal the exact number of episodes in their new deal, they emphasized it was for “seasons” — plural — and that the number of hours aligns with their original plan to adapt author Liu Cixin’s two remaining novels in his Hugo-winning trilogy.

At the 2024 Pet Gala, fashion designer Anthony Rubio recreates celebrities’ Met Gala outfits — for dogs. The Pet Gala was held at the Museum of the Dog for the first time this year, inviting guests for a runway show and a dinner. The charitable event raised money for the museum, which showcases dog-focused art.
The gala featured 12 dogs dressed in pet couture inspired by the 2024 Met Gala‘s dress code of “The Garden of Time.” A chihuahua recreated one of Zendaya’s looks. A Pomeranian dressed up à la Jennifer Lopez. A poodle was kitted out as Bad Bunny, complete with similar sunglasses. A Chinese crested’s look was inspired by Gayle King’s custom Marchesa gown. Rubio crafted all of the outfits himself in the brief turnaround between the first Monday of the month and Monday, May 20, staying up until 4 a.m. the night before the dog fashion event.

Richard Foronjy, a character actor who grew up in the gangster world and went to prison before becoming an actor in movies including “Midnight Run,” “Prince of the City” and “Carlito’s Way,” died Sunday. He was 86.
Foronjy, born in Brooklyn, N.Y., saw his first small role as Corsaro in “Serpico,” the 1973 autobiographical crime drama that starred Al Pacino as a whistleblower whose work led to an investigation by the Knapp Commission into the department.
In the 1984 “Repo Man,” starring Harry Dean Stanton and Emilio Estevez, Foronjy played Arnold Plettschner, the rent-a-cop with the memorable speech, “You’re fuckin’ right I’m Plettschner! Arnold Plettschner! Three times decorated in two world wars! I was killing people while you were still swimming around in your father’s balls! You little scumbag! I worked five years in a slaughterhouse, and ten years as a prison guard in Attica!”

Nathalie Emmanuel’s first trip to the Cannes Film Festival was certainly a memorable one.
The “Fast and Furious” franchise star and “Game of Thrones” alum knows what it’s like to be in the spotlight, but Cannes is unique. First, consider the fact that she’s the leading lady in legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola’s longtime passion project “Megalopolis,” which made its world premiere at the festival. Then, there’s the reality of ascending the famed red steps to the Palais des Festivals.
“This whole experience has been like nothing I’ve ever had before,” Emmanuel told Variety the next day. “That moment was so much bigger and so much grander — I just had no concept of how crazy it would be, how exciting it would be, how many people there would be. … It was quite overwhelming, but really exciting and felt like a real celebration.”

“Garfiosa”? “Furiofield”?
Whatever the portmanteau for this Memorial Day weekend’s dual release of “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and “The Garfield Movie,” the two newcomers are aiming to jolt the sluggish summer season.
“Furiosa,” the fifth entry in director George Miller’s post-apocalyptic “Mad Max” series, looks to lead the way with $40 million to $45 million from 3,750 venues over the four-day holiday weekend. Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie” should trail in second with $30 million to $35 million from 4,000 venues between Friday and Monday. Box office comparisons to the same holiday weekend in 2023 will be tough given that Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” remake took the crown with $118 million.
Warner Bros. spent $168 million on “Furiosa,” not including the many millions to market the movie. It’s not expected to live up to the debut of its predecessor, 2015’s “Max Max: Fury Road,” which captured $45 million over three days. That film, led...

During his Monday return to the anchor chair, The Daily Show host Jon Stewart brought up the topic of the so-called cancel culture that is allegedly plaguing the political right. He concluded that while mostly these pundits claim the woke left are coming to get them, the true cancel culture of today only occurs when a Republican speaks ill of former president Donald Trump.
Following some light jabs and gags around Trump’s current criminal trial in New York — one which had Stewart comparing the former president to the cartoon character Mr. Magoo (‘He’s just stumbling around, quid pro quo and metal beams falling all around, gets out completely unscathed”), the host brought up the hot topic of Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker. The religious pro-athlete gave a commencement speech at Benedictine College last week where he condemned abortion, euthanasia, IVF, surrogacy and the LGBTQ community — and then...

The third season of Bridgerton recorded the show’s biggest opening weekend to date.
According to Netflix’s internal rankings, the first half of season three racked up 45.05 million views (total hours watched divided by running time) worldwide after its May 16 premiere. That’s about 165.2 million hours of viewing time.
By comparison, season two debuted in March 2022 with just more than 193 million hours of viewing time globally — but that was for a full season, with a running time more than twice as long as the first half of the current season. Thus its opening weekend view count is around 22.7 million. Season two also had a three-day opening period vs. four for the current run, but one extra day only accounts for a small part of season three’s lead. (Netflix didn’t publicly release weekly viewing tallies for season one.)

The first reviews for Donald Trump movie The Apprentice are in, following its world premiere at Cannes.
Directed by Ali Abbasi and written by Gabriel Sherman, the film follows Sebastian Stan’s Trump during his rise to power in 1980s America, as he’s mentored by firebrand right-wing attorney Roy Cohn, played by Succession star Jeremy Strong.
The cast also includes Borat Subsequent Moviefilm star Maria Bakalova as Ivana Trump and Martin Donavan as the former president’s father Fred Trump Sr.
The movie, which currently doesn’t have a U.S. distributor, holds a 69 percent freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes as of Tuesday.
Though the Trump campaign has threatened to sue over the film, Abbasi offered to screen the movie for the former president and talk about it with him, saying, “I don’t necessarily think that this is a movie he would dislike.”

Dune: Part Two opened on March 1, 2024 and played for a guaranteed two to three weeks run on premium Imax giant screens.
But that wasn’t enough, and Denis Villeneuve’s epic for Warner Bros. that starred Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya got an extended run in Imax theaters in April, and not just because fans wanted to see the sequel a second time.
Imax CFO Natasha Fernandes put the extended premium screen run down to the benefits of appointment viewing — i.e. waiting to see Dune: Part Two in Imax theaters vs. standard movie exhibitors.
In the wake of Oppenheimer, Imax released a limited number of 70-millimeter prints of Dune: Part Two, a box office strategy that earned theater sellouts for weeks on end. And Fernandes reported at an investors conference on Tuesday that fans who couldn’t get a ticket for the opening week waited to get a seat in the following weeks,...

Ever since they were granted essential worker status during the pandemic, food deliverers on bikes have become a steady fixture of the contemporary urban landscape. And yet, most us only interact with them for a few seconds at a time, grabbing the box of pizza or bag of food, saying thank you (if we’re polite enough) and quickly shutting the door.
What happens after that is the subject of director Boris Lojkine’s compelling third feature, The Story of Souleymane (L’Histoire de Souleymane), a realistic and very humanistic look at one immigrant’s grueling daily life in Paris, where he struggles to make a living and obtain legal status.
Another movie immediately comes to mind here, which is Vittorio De Sica’s neorealist classic, Bicycle Thieves. Both films are structured as suspenseful, ticking-clock dramas where men navigate a ruthless city as they ride around on two wheels, doing everything they can to get by.

Six months after Matthew Perry’s tragic death sent ripples around the world, the Los Angeles Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration have launched a joint criminal investigation into how he died, the LAPD told The Hollywood Reporter.
The beloved Friends star died on Oct. 28 at 54 from the acute effects of the anesthetic ketamine, his autopsy revealed. “At the high levels of ketamine found in his postmortem blood specimens, the main lethal effects would be from both cardiovascular overstimulation and respiratory depression,” the report, obtained by THR, stated.
The autopsy also listed drowning, coronary artery disease and buprenorphine (used to treat opioid addiction) effects as contributing factors to his death. It was ruled an accident at the time, with no signs of foul play.
But now, the LAPD and DEA are investigating how the actor came to have so much of the drug in his system and possession in general.

John Kander may be close to 100 years old, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t involved with the upcoming film adaptation of the Broadway musical “Kiss of the Spider Woman.”
Kander and the late lyricist Fred Ebb – known collectively as Kander and Ebb – composed the music and wrote the songs for the original 1993 Tony-winning Broadway production of “Kiss of the Spider Woman.”
The upcoming film, directed by Bill Condon, stars Jennifer Lopez, Diego Luna and newcomer Tonatiuh.
“John Kander, who is 97 years old, was in the studio with me,” Lopez told me Monday at the premiere of her new Netflix sci-fi action movie, “Atlas.” “He is the most beautiful man. He was there for all of our recordings of the album and the pre-records for the movie. It was a dream.”
Lopez said Kander only had “very small notes” on her performance. “I was shocked,” she said.

Shot between his directing Alicia Vikander in “Firebrand” and Kristen Stewart in “Rosebushpruning,” “Motel Destino,” which bows in Cannes Competition on May 22, can be seen as a return by Brazil’s now most international director to his Brazilian roots.

An erotic thriller, “Motel Destino” turns on Dayana, the young wife of a roadside sex hotel owner who seduces on-the-run minor mobster Heraldo for great sex. But she soon conceives the idea of his helping her to kill her terrifyingly abusive older husband.

“Motel Destino” is melodrama “in the sense these characters that are trying to survive, by any means.

So this is what economizing looks like in Cannes.
The rosé still flowed, though not as freely, and it was easier to get a reservation at the Michelin-starred restaurants that are usually booked months in advance of the film festival. There were still rooms to be had at the Hôtel du Cap, the posh resort where studio chiefs and movie stars typically stay. Most troubling, the deals — both for completed films that premiered in Cannes and the packages that hit the Côte d’Azur searching for financing — are taking much longer to close.
Even in the shimmering south of France there’s no escaping that the movie business, having endured Covid shutdowns and two devastating labor strikes, has lost much of its luster. Donna Langley, the chairman of NBCUniversal Studio Group, was blunt during a talk, noting that the domestic box office is down 20% and the global box office has...

The fashion designer posted two images of Combs’ seven children on Instagram and shared in the caption that she was “heartbroken” over what Ventura must be going through.
“I am heartbroken that Cassie must relive the horror of her abuse, and my heart goes out to her. I know exactly how she feels, and through my empathy, it has triggered my own trauma,” Hylton wrote. “These young people were raised by women that want the best for them — we put God and education first and have always been united in our mutual effort to support their dreams. Thanks to enhanced security measures, attendees at this year’s Cannes Film Festival have faced only a few hiccups. Even the ongoing war and Israeli hostage situation in Gaza haven’t made headlines during the festival, in stark contrast with the Berlinale.
But one private screening, which was scheduled outside of the festival and market, was canceled abruptly, and attendees were told it was due to a security threat. Details of what happened remain unclear.
On May 17, WestEnd Films co-founder Sharon Harel-Cohen organized a screening of “Bearing Witness” for a small group of industryites who were in town for the festival. Celebrities: they’re not just like us, exactly, but they’re human just the same. Which is why some of the current discourse around “nepo babies” must be a little wounding for showbiz scions nursing their own insecurities about their talent, their reputation and their place in the world — even if the prudent thing to do, from a PR perspective, is to openly check your privilege and move on. Yet whatever degree of sympathy one might feel for actor Chiara Mastroianni — the daughter of Catherine Deneuve and Marcello Mastroianni, a dazzling legacy to bear but perhaps not an easy one — largely evaporates by the end of “Marcello Mio,” a vastly indulgent but gossamer-weight bit of frippery from French writer-director Christophe Honoré, in which Mastroianni channels her late father to increasingly contrived comic effect.

Netflix is getting an early jump on Tires.
The streamer has handed out an early second-season renewal for the scripted comedy starring Shane Gillis. The pickup arrives just before the series, co-created by Gillis, Steve Gerben and John McKeever, officially arrives May 23. Season two will arrive in 2025 as Netflix plots more programming to return on an annual basis similar to broadcast fare.
Gillis, the comedian who hosted Saturday Night Live earlier this year after he was fired from the show in 2019, is fresh off three sold-out shows in L.A. as part of the Netflix Is a Joke festival. Gillis also has his second stand-up special coming in 2025 after his 2023 effort, Beautiful Dogs, spent two weeks in the U.S. top 10 list.

Veteran producer Simon Kinberg, who oversaw most of the “X-Men” movies for 20th Century Fox, is in talks to produce an upcoming “Star Trek” movie for Paramount Pictures, Variety has confirmed.
The project has already been in development at the studio for some time, with Seth Grahame-Smith (“Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”) handing the screenplay and Toby Haynes on board to direct. Insiders say the film is intended as an origin story for the main timeline of the “Star Trek” franchise, set in the aftermath of humanity’s first contact with aliens.
Kinberg started his career as a screenwriter, penning 2005’s “XXX: State of the Union” and “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” before joining the “X-Men” franchise as a co-screenwriter of 2006’s “X-Men: The Last Stand.” He transitioned to producing every subsequent “X-Men” film, and he made his directorial debut with the final movie in the franchise, 2019’s “Dark Phoenix.” He...

Riley Keough Claims Fraud, Forged Lisa Marie Presley Signature in Graceland Foreclosure Sale Attempt
Actress Riley Keough is taking the fight to save Graceland — the iconic Memphis home of her grandfather Elvis Presley — to court this week after what she claims is a fraudulent attempt to use her late mother’s forged signature to pass the property over to settle a multi-million dollar debt.
Keough, the trustee of the Promenade Trust, filed a lawsuit on May 15 in Shelby County Chancery Court and is now seeking to block an entity named Naussany Investments & Private Lending LLC from taking profits from the sale of Graceland, a longtime Memphis tourism destination and place of pilgrimage for Presley and his fans worldwide. In the complaint, Keough’s attorney suggests that the entity attempting to have Graceland sold off forged Lisa Marie Presley’s signature on the document that allowed the famed property to be held as collateral for a $3.8 million loan.
